Eating Glutinous Rice Cakes

In parts of the South China, it is a custom to eat glutinous rice cakes in the 10th month in Chinese lunar calendar. In ancient times, glutinous rice cake was a traditional sacrificial offering. It's first used by farmers to sacrifice for the "God of Ox". The Chinese folk adage that "On the first day of 10th month, glutinous rice cakes are piping hot" is a description of this sacrificial event.

Making Preserved Meat

As the Minor Snow comes, the temperature drops sharply and the air becomes dry. For farmers in the countryside, it is the best time to prepare sausages and preserved meat for the coming Spring Festival.

Eating Pork Soup Feast。

Around the Minor Snow, Tujia people would start the annual folk-custom activity of "Killing Pigs to Celebrate the New Year", adding a warm atmosphere to the cold winter. Eating "pork soup" is the custom of Tujia people. They will delicately cook the "pork soup" with the finest fresh pork in the activity.

Drying Fish

During Minor Snow, fishermen living by the seaside in the central-southern Taiwan would start to dry fish to stock up on for winter. Shoals of mullet, sailfish and sand fish will swim to the Taiwan Strait at this time. As a Taiwanese saying reads "The bluespot mullet is too fat and plump to see its heat in October", which means that in Budai Township of Chiayi County, people can catch bluespot mullets in lunar October.

Eating Instant-boiled Mutton

It is a common view for Beijingers to eat instant-boiled mutton during Minor Snow. Not only that, nourishing food such as mutton, beef, and chicken are also highly recommended in the gloomy and cold season with insufficient sunlight.
