Outside the reservoir dam in Longqing Gorge, two mountains tower aloft and blot out the sun, making water in the gorge freeze around four months. Thanks to its natural condition, the gorge has been holding the Ice Lantern Festival since 1987, which has become a traditional item of winter tourism in Beijing.
During the Ice Lantern Festival, the lantern fair areas would be set up at the foot of the huge dam of the reservoir in Gucheng Village and between the two mountains, where giant icicles formed by the natural seepage water of the mountains present a rare ice cascade, creating an impressive background for the festival. With blazing lights and glitzy ice and snow sculptures, festive lanterns shine colorfully and turn the snow-covered gorge a dreamy world and a sea of joy.
