The City God Temple is the sacred place for Quanzhen School, the mainstream school of Taoism in China where four major such temples are most well-known. The City God is one of the most important gods in the ancient Han nationality's religious culture. Generally, for the Han people and Taoism, renowned officials and heroes who made contributions to the locals would be honored as the City Gods, the gods who protect their city. The City God Temple of Beijing, with a 200-year longer history than the celebrated City God Temple of Shanghai, ranks first among all such temples across China.

The ancient temple by far has been renovated and turned into a street park, adding a solemn landscape to the frisky financial street.
