The Soong Ching-ling's former residence was originally a part of back yard garden in Prince Chun’s Mansion in Qing Dynasty. Madame Song as one of the greatest Chinese figures in the 20th century moved here in 1963. The residence was then rebuilt into Soong Ching-ling Memorial Residence from 1983 to 1985 after she passed away in May 29, 1981. Soong Ching-ling's former residence has been listed as a Major Historical and Cultural Site Protected at the National Level.

Soong Ching-ling left Shanghai and came to Beijing for the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference at the invitation of the CPC Central Committee in 1949, from which she settled in Beijing. In 1962, then Premier Zhou Enlai was entrusted by the Party and the government to prepare a residence for the Madame and finally the Premier decided to renovate the garden of Prince Chun’s mansion into the residence of Soong Ching-ling. The Chinese master architect Liang Sicheng designed a two–storey house featuring a combination of Chinese and Western elements in the west of the original main building. Madame Soong lived here for 18 years!

There are a lot of famous view spots in Soong Ching-ling's former residence, and the most impressive place is a small traditional Chinese building with two floors in west yard, where photos of Madame Soong Ching-ling and her husband Mr. Sun Yat-sen are placed. The fundamental reason that people admire Soong Ching-ling is her patriotism and charming personality as she keeps the image of the nation’s first lady in people’s minds.
