A China-based Bookstore Born in 1942
The bookstore is situated in the small courtyard opposite the Central Academy of Fine Arts. Under its simple-designed white signboard is a vintage copper plate engraved with “since 1942” at the entrance. As you step into, it seems to drag you into an old dream in which youwill driftin an old bookstore.
Founded in Shanghai in 1942, the Paragon Book Gallery mainly offered books about oriental art. It once relocated in New York and Chicago and laterreturned to China.
Its offerings by now are more professional, most of which are original art books from overseas and some Chinese books about collections, paintings, and sculptures.
You may often feel the thoughtfulness of the store from its layout. For example, next to a Buddhist statue covered tome is a poster of the exhibition “Tang Dynasty Tomb Figures of Hu People” in the Museum of Oriental Ceramics,Osaka, Japan. In addition to the green plants at the entrance, it offers creative souvenirs designed by itself, such as bookmarks and canvas bags, featuring simple design and elegant appearance.
