The Museum of Ethnic Cultures in Minzu University of China

2018-07-10

It is a comprehensive museum of ethnology. It is also “the only museum among the 100 plus museums of colleges and universities in China that houses the cultural relics of 56 ethnic groups”, and “the only museum in northern China that exhibits the cultural relics of the Gaoshan people in Taiwan”. It is amazing to appreciate the charm of 56 ethnic groups in one museum.

Sitting on the center of the campus of Minzu University of China, the museum covers a building area of 1,200 m2 and has an exhibition area of 500 m2. The museums preserves about 30 thousand articles of 14 categories, including cultural relics, books and records, clothing, production tools, and others. It mainly displays the clothing and personal adornment of all ethnic minorities, demonstrating their talent and traditional techniques in textile, printing and dyeing, and leather tanning. Here you can see Mongolian robes and leather boots of Mongols, hats studded with jewelry and colorful skirts of Hani people, delicate silver dishes and silver kettles of Tibetan people, as well as some religious articles, such as figure of Buddha and totem-themed woodcarving. All these have contributed to the research in the history and culture of ethnic minorities, and the further communication and exchanges among different ethnic groups.

The permanent exhibition here is “Traditional Culture Exhibition of the Chinese Nation”, consisting of “Clothing Culture Exhibition of Ethic Groups in Northern China”, “Clothing Culture Exhibition of Ethic Groups in Southern China”, “Religious Culture Exhibition”, and others. Theme exhibitions include: “Cultural Relics Exhibition of Ethnic Minorities in Taiwan”, “School History Exhibition of Minzu University of China”, “Headdress Culture Exhibition of Ethnic Minorities in China”, “Writing and Calligraphy Exhibition of Ethnic Minorities”, and “Ancient Characters and Ancient Books Exhibition Hall of Chinese Ethnic Groups”.
