Arthur M. Sackler Museum of Art and Archaeology at Peking University

Located in the Minghe Garden of Peking University, Arthur M. Sackler Museum of Art and Archaeology at Peking University is the first archaeological museum among China's colleges and universities. The museum is striving in teaching, scientific research and serving the society. It also provides samples for inspection, and venue of education and practicing for students major in Chinese archaeology and museum science, supports the study of Chinese archaeology and presents the achievements, promotes knowledge about archaeology and traditional Chinese cultures, carries out international academic communication in cultural relics, archaeology, and museum science, and thus improving the friendship of people across the world. Covering an area of 2,000m2 or so, it boasts collections mainly classified into stoneware, bronze ware, oracle bone, pottery, porcelain, painting and calligraphy and stone rubbing. Permanent exhibitions are divided into seven parts, namely, the Old Stone Age, the Neolithic Age, Xia-Shang-Zhou Period, the Warring States Period, the Qin and Han Dynasties, Three Kingdoms and the Jin Dynasty, the Northern and Southern Dynasties, the Sui and Tang Dynasties, the Song, Liao, Jin, Yuan and Ming Dynasties.

Special Exhibition for the 120th Anniversary Celebration of Peking University—“Uncovering Truth—Peking University Achievements in Archaeological Teaching and Research”

The exhibition focuses on the promotion of significant archaeological discovery to discipline construction. It presents the achievements of the archaeology school of Peking University in teaching and research through over 370 articles of cultural relics, pictures, photos, reports, papers, and tools. In addition to the emphasis on ornamental value, it also highlights the feature of Sackler Museum of Art of Peking University as the university-held museum, and summarizes experience and looks into the future on the process of discipline construction. The exhibition covers six units: Archaeology in the Old Stone Age, Archaeology in the New Stone Age, Archaeology in Xia-Shang-Zhou Periods, Archaeology in Han and Tang Dynasties, Archaeology in Song-Yuan-Ming Dynasties, and the Archaeology Techniques and Methods.

The first unit is comprised of “Discovery of Ancient Human in China”, “The Development of Gravel Industry in South China”, “From the Emergence of Modern People to the Source of Agriculture”, presents the fruitful achievements of School of Archaeology and Museology of Peking University in teaching and researching of the Old Stone Age.

The second unit focuses on the significant discovery of the School in the New Stone Age, and shows the visitors the remarkable results in the archaeology teaching and researching in such historic sites as Quanhu Village, Wangwan, Beizhuang, and Baligang.

The third unit presents the fundamental discoveries from the Graveyard of Kings of Jin Dynasty, Tianma-Qucun Site, the relics of Zhougong Temple, Zhou Yuan Site, and other historic sites of Xia, Shang, and Zhou periods. The school has contributed its share in these projects. Among them, cultural relics represented by “Phoenix Singing in Jin” and “Jin Marquise Su Bells”, the valuable treasures of Shanxi Museum, will also be borrowed to Peking University.

The fourth unit highlights Dabaozishan site, Majiayuan site, and Hongzhou Kiln Site, and exhibits the significant achievements of the School in the teaching and researching of Han and Tang Dynasties.

The fifth unit takes archaeology on ceramics of Cizhou Kiln, Ding Kiln, Yue Kiln and others as well as the Tomb of Baisha in the Song Dynasty as the examples, and introduces the outstanding achievement of the school’s practice in the archaeology teaching and researching of the Song, Yuan, and Ming dynasties. Among them, the box of bricks of Song Tombs (No.123) unearthed from the No.1 Tomb was borrowed from the Palace Museum for exhibition. It is the well-known discovery of Su Bai, the leading figure of the school. It has also been the first public exhibition since it came up out of the ground in 1951.

The sixth unit combines VR model and summarizes the experience of Peking University in archaeology techniques and methods, forming a world-class interdisciplinary study platform and the innovation mechanism and teaching modes of integrating humanities and natural science.
