Tianmenshan National Forest Park
Sandwiched between “Thousands-Year-old” Tanzhe Temple and the “First Altar in the World” Jietai Temple, Tianmenshan National Forest Park lies 40 kilometers away from downtown Beijing. As an extension of the Taihang Mountains, it covers an area of 80 hectares and rises as high as 550 meters at its main peak. Records can be seen in Wan Shu Za Ji (a book recording politics, economics, history, geography, customs and writings left by famous characters of the Ming Dynasty) by Shen Bang of the Ming Dynasty, “Rising dizzyingly high by the Hunhe River, the precipitous Shiku Mountain has only one passageway that surveys the water and only negotiates two feet. Just imagine how dangerous and difficult to pass it! Inside, there is a grotto named Banruo Hall.” The stone inscription of “Tianmenshan” in the grotto survives into today. So, the mountain earns its name of Tianmen Mountain. Yet, locals prefer another name of it, Kulong Mountain.
