Crafts of Beijing Filigree Inlaying

As one of traditional Chinese manual skills, filigree inlaying is a technique that draws gold, silver and copper into wires, which are made into various jewelry, utensils and other decorations with various techniques. On June 7, 2008, filigree inlaying was listed into the second group of national intangible cultural heritage by the State Council.

Dachang Hui Autonomy County is under the jurisdiction of Langfang Municipality, Hebei Province. Thanks to its prime location, the county has witnessed the birth, inheritance and development of Dachang filigree inlaying. Dachang filigree inlaying features lifelike shapes, elaborate patterns, perfect workmanship and high technical content. Combining religious, cultural and aesthetic elements of multiple dynasties, Dachang filigree inlaying has distinctive features as a traditional manual technique as well as styling features. With high aesthetic value, it has existed as a unique offering of the arts and crafts circle of China.

As one of the “Eight Traditional Handicraft Products of Old Beijing Style”, filigree inlaying is a technique used to produce jewelry for royal families in ancient times. It has once bordered on the extinction. CHJ Jewellery, a renowned jewelry enterprise, has joined hands with charity organization “Xihan Action” to launch “Saving Intangible Cultural Heritage Handicraft--Filigree Craft” program in CHJ Museum of Jewellery, Shantou. At the same time, a filigree craft seminar was held. Thanks to four years’ efforts, “Filigree Bridge”, the most precious treasure of the museum that was made through the painstaking work of more than 10 filigree craftsmen has made its debut.
