Xishiku Catholic Church, originally known as the Church of the Saviour and colloquially referred to as North Church, is located at No. 33 Xishiku Avenue, Xicheng District, Beijing. Open to the public in 1703, it ever served as Catholicism cathedral in Beijing for a long time and is one of Beijing’s largest and oldest churches.
North Church is typically Gothic. With four lofty pinnacles, three pointed-arch entrances and the rose window arching across the middle round space, it is brimming with elegant and ornate charm. Surrounded by verdant pine and cypress trees, it appears more holy and lofty. At both sides in front of it lies a Chinese-style quadrangle yellow glazed pavilion with a pyramid roof. Inside, there is a calligraphy plaque personally hand-written by Qianlong Emperor. Western and Chinese buildings with different heights are blended in with each other into a whole, which would stun you. Saint statues standing along the both sides of its main entrance are exclusive to it among Beijing’s churches. In 1985, it was renovated as good as new. With great splendor, it is hailed as Beijing’s most gorgeous church.
