Duan Qirui Former Government Building is a magnificent complex of Chinese and Western architectural styles. At the end of 1924, Duan Qirui founded the Temporary Government of Republic of China and located his government at this building. The building was named as Iron No. 1 because it was located on No. 1 Iron Lion Hutong during the period of the Republic of China.
Entering the yard, you will see the main building first. With the classic Victorian-style appearance, the main building is decorated with exquisite arches and galleries. The main bell tower which faces the main building, however, is in Gothic style. Looking close into the bell tower, you will see more special details. The sculpture on the bottom is the combination of Baroque style and Chinese traditional style. The delicate and grand complex of western and Chinese styles and of various European styles is built in the late Qing Dynasty when the western culture and Chinese culture were colliding and exchanging.
Time went by and the complex went through its ups and downs, leaving the building unique vicissitudes and profoundness. Nowadays, the yard is no longer a confidential vital place where the public were forbidden but a place where researchers of Chinese Academy of Social Sciences come and go, talking and laughing.
