Origin of Northern Buddhism in China

2020-06-26

Covering a total area of 800 hectares, Hongluo Temple is 4 km away from the north of Huairou District, Beijing and 55 km away from Beijing city proper. Built in the 4th Xiankang year of the Dongjin Dynasty, Hongluo Temple exists as the origin of Northern Buddhism in China and the largest Buddhist garden, and thus dominating the Buddhist circle for over one thousand years. As the saying goes, “the Putuo Temple reigns in the Buddhist community of Southern China while the Hongluo Temple commands that of Northern China”. With historical richness and cultural greatness, as well the wonderful geographical and climate conditions, the Hongluo Mountain and the Hongluo Temple exist as the “Buddha's Pure Land” that is unique and sacred.

The temple is embraced by forests of towering ancient trees, truly a geomantic treasure land. Millions of bamboo trees and a pine forest of one thousand mu surround the temple, making for a secluded, quiet and picturesque landscape. The supernatural power of the mountains enables such a Buddhist garden featuring superb fengshui and natural beauty.

You can choose among four different paths to climb, and enjoy the scenery in distance or closely. A hiking trail on the easternmost, Qingchun Road is paved for tourists to view red leaves. The road is flanked by colorful trees, including smoke trees, torch trees, persimmon trees, and other red leaf trees. Tourists can take the road as an entrance to the temple, pay homage to Buddha, and gain a peaceful mind. Or they can amble among the forest and watch red leaves closely, and enjoy the pleasant, quiet moment.
