Tears of Wasted Mountain
Chongzhen, the last emperor of the Ming Dynasty of China, is fatuous and extorts exorbitant taxes, adding to the people’s suffering. The peasant GAO Liangmin, who cannot afford to pay taxes, has to pick herbs with his son through the night, but unfortunately, they are eaten by a tiger. GAO Liangmin’s daughter-in-law ZHANG Huizhu weaves silk round the clock to help out with the family expenses. Hearing the news that her husband and son have got killed, ZHANG Huizhu’s mother-in-law falls ill. Before long, ZHANG Huizhu’s only son Baolian is conscripted and her mother-in-law dies of the disease. The tax collector still levies taxes on her, so she cannot but escape into a wasted mountain alone, where she puts an end to her own life as she sees the tax collector arriving.
Broken Bridge
The story takes place in Zhenjiang City in the Song Dynasty of China. BAI Suzhen is a white snake spirit who has cultivated vital energy for one thousand years. To repay the intellectual XU Xian for saving her in his previous life, she turns into human shape. Later she runs into a green snake spirit named Xiaoqing and travels in company with her. BAI Suzhen practices supernatural power and picks up with XU Xian cunningly. She then marries him. After the wedding, Fahai, a monk from Jinshan Temple, tells XU Xian that BAI Suzhen is an evil snake rather than a well-bred lady. XU Xian is dubious of what he says. Later XU Xian makes BAI Suzhen drink a cup of realgar wine as Fahai tells him, and she reveals her true form as a large white snake, which scares XU Xian to death. BAI Suzhen goes up to heaven to steal the magic herb ganoderma lucidum, which then brings XU Xian back to life. Fahai fools XU Xian into entering Jinshan Temple and puts him under house arrest. BAI Suzhen and Xiaoqing fight against Fahai by flooding Jinshan Temple, but other living creatures are therefore hurt. Violating the laws of heaven, BAI Suzhen is locked in Fahai’s bowl after she gives birth to her son and then imprisoned in Leifeng Pagoda. Later, BAI Suzhen’s son grows up and becomes the Number One Scholar in the imperial examination. He goes to the pagoda to hold a memorial ceremony for his mother and saves her out of the pagoda. The family reunites at last.
