Liling is one of the major ceramics production areas in China and its ceramicsmaking history dates back to the Eastern Han Dynasty. It mainly produced celadon in the Song Dynasty and white and blue pottery in the Ming and Qing dynasties. After the founding of New China, Hunan Ceramics Research Institute was established in 1955 with great support from the government. Senior artists represented by Wu Shouqi have brought up a contingent of excellent talents who endeavor to restore the glory of Liling underglaze color ceramic art through improving the processing techniques. Today Liling under-glaze color ceramics lead the world in terms of the ceramic quality and pigment stability at high temperature.

Chen Yanglong was born to a family knowledgeable in ceramic art. He is among the first cohort of ten apprentices of Hunan Ceramics Research Institute. He learns from the senior artists like Wu Shouqi, Song Chengren and Lin Jiahu; he is a leading artist engaging in the rejuvenation of high temperature underglaze color ceramic art. Chen Yanglong is committed to the preparation of raw materials and to the study on and experimentation with innovative processing techniques. After more than four decades of learning, research and experiments, he has developed the unique style of “thin smear” to turn out a jade-like ceramic that is very white, thin, transparent and lustrous and deliver the artistic conception that is fresh, lofty and elegant.
