2017-09-19

Wofo Temple, official name Shifang Pujue Temple, is a Buddhist temple located within the Beijing Botanical Garden, 30 kilometers from the city center.

The temple was first built in the Reign of Zhenguan in the Tang Dynasty (627-649), when it was believed that the temple already had a statue of a recumbent Buddha in sandlewood. The temple was renovated and expanded in different dynasties while also undergoing name changes. In 1321 during the Yuan Dynasty, a 5.2 meter long statue made of copper was housed in the temple, which is the recumbent Buddha we can see at today. Because of the Buddha, the temple is popularly known as Temple of Recumbent Buddha (Wofosi) and has become an attractive tourist spot.

Following a north-south axis, the temple contains an entrance gate followed by three halls. On either side of the axis are buildings used by the monks for lodging as well as to accommodate guests. The first hall is called the Tianwang (King of Buddhism) Hall, the second the Sanshi (Three Ages) Buddha Hall, followed by the Recumbent Buddha Hall.

The temple is also famous for its rare and beautiful trees, such as the avenue of ancient cypresses leading to the temple gate, sal trees brought from India, pines, ginkgos, locusts, wisteria, lilac and forsythia.
