The Tianjin Museum is a comprehensive museum dedicated to Chinese ancient art and the history of Tianjin. Its permanent collections, numbering 200 thousand works, cover bronze antique, porcelain, painting and calligraphy, jade, argent etc. and 200 thousand books illustrating and documenting the story of Chinese culture from its beginnings to the present.
The museum's predecessor was former Tianjin Museum established in 1918, which was one of the earliest museums in mainland China. In 2004, the museum merged with Tianjin Art Museum and Tianjin History Museum and opened to the public in 2007, on the site of the old Tianjin Museum.
In the heart of Tianjin, the new pavilion of the museum serves a large space for exhibitions. The 2,800-square meter temporary exhibition space is available to accommodate major national and international exhibitions, incorporating material outside the main and specialist permanent exhibitions and enriching the cultural life of city residents. The international lecture theater can accommodate close to 400 people and has state of the art facilities and equipment, making it ideal for fostering exchange by hosting major international academic events.
Its permanent exhibitions include The Origination of Tianjin Culture, mainly displaying ancient Tianjin, Tianjin – An Epitome of China in the Past Hundred Years introduced the development of modern Tianjin and Selected Rare Relics Collected By Tianjin Museum. In addition, specialist exhibitions themed with jade ware, painting, calligraphy, ceramics, bronze mirror, ink stone and rubbings are available for visitors as well.
