Mei Lanfang Grand Theatre

2017-07-18

Peking Opera, a synthesis of music, dance, art and acrobatics, is known as China's national opera, and is widely regarded as a unique expression of Chinese culture. The Mei Lanfang Grand Theatre, the first one designed especially for Peking Opera shows, was named after the master Mei Lanfang (1894-1961), one of the most famous Peking opera artists.

The theatre is situated at the intersection of the bustling Financial Street and antique Ping'an Street in Xicheng District, Beijing. It contains 7 floors of which two are underground. The total area is 13,000 square meters and the capacity is 980 spectators. Although designed for Peking operas, the theater will also stage other types of performance, such as dramas and concerts. It hosts conventions, exhibitions and facilities for audiovisual recording as well. It is a nice place to meet friends and refine their taste of music.

It is a fan-shaped building with a stylish steel and glass structure. The interior features some key ingredients in traditional Chinese architecture such as the magnificent bright red columns and walls, which are often seen in royal palaces. A bronze seated statue of Mei is placed at the center of the lobby, which stands 1.5 meters tall and 2.5 meters wide. Dozens of wooden circular embossments portraying the history of Peking Opera were mounted on the walls.
