First constructed in the Tang Dynasty (around AD 623), Jietai Temple has a former name, Huiju Temple, meaning the temple with collective wisdom. In Liao Dynasty (AD 916 – 1125), Master Fa Jun established the monk’s altar in Jietai Temple, popular enough that the temple is also called “Jietan”, meaning monk’s altar. It became the biggest monk’s altar in China since the year between AD 1065 and 1074, and had been called “The Grand Altar” ever after. It is astounding how well the altar has been preserved so well until today.
