Malan Flower: An Eternal Childhood Memory

Malan Flower has been part of the repertoire since the foundation of the China National Theatre for Children, as well as the representative of the New Chinese Drama for Children. Since its debut on June 1st, 1956, Malan Flower has accompanied three generations of audiences for 56 years with the charm of its plot and the appeal of its stage performance, earning its place in the eternal childhood memories of the Chinese people. Over more than 50 years, a total of five versions of Malan Flower have been staged, and it has constantly improved and grown along with the drama. In 2009, it was awarded the first 'Excellent Remaining Repertoire Award' by the Ministry of Culture.

The magic has been in full and unfailing blossom for 60 years. So far, it has been performed over 2,000 times to a full audience each time, becoming the most popular gold remaining work in the repertoire with the highest attendance of the China National Theatre for Children.

SynopsisUnder the protection of the 'Son of the Mountains' Mr. MA, the Malan Flower is in full blossom once a year. It protects kind-hearted and hard-working people, and can reveal its magic power and grant wishes as long as people speak the password in times of danger. However, the greedy Old Cat always wants to take the flower for itself in order to live an unearned life. One year after the marriage of Mr. MA and Small Lan, when Small Lan goes down to visit her parents, Old Cat steals the Malan Flower and persuades Great Lan, the twin sister of Small Lan, to dress up as her sister and find out the password of Malan Mountain. Will Old Cat's plan be successful? Will the Malan Flower realize its desires?

China Naitional Theatre for Children was formerly the China National Children's Art Theatre of the People's Republic of China. It was founded in 1956 and the first president was Ren Hong.

China Naitional Theatre for Children shoulders the responsibility of providing outstanding children's theater works for the majority of young children, as well as that of the inheritance, development and innovation of the children's theater arts. Giving full play to the representing, exemplary and guiding role, the National Children's Art Theatre has trained several generations of artists and backbone in the children's theater art of China and has won numerous art awards.

The Theatre created and performed excellent children's theater works many times with tours all over the country from north to south and has been to Singapore, Japan, Korea, Vietnam, Australia and other countries for exchange performances, winning widespread praise.

Over the years, major works of the Theatre include Malan Flower, A Family of Revolutionaries, Young Guardians, In the Name of Revolution, Yueyun, Newsboy, A Little Courtyard Like This, 12 Months, Paul Korchagin, Flashing Stars, Zhiyazi, The Beginning of the Epoch and People and Moonlight Lullaby. In recent years, major works include Shangri-La, Approaching Shakespeare, Biscuit Boy, The Trip of Andersen, Little Tadpole Looking for Mom, Run, Rabbit!, Cinderella, The Grimm Brothers and the Magical Forest, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Little Jeep · Change, Change, Change, Pipi Stockings, Zodiac, Red Sofa Music City, Journey to the West, Sun Bird, Cube Building, Canned Man and Sky-blue Paper Airplane.

The Theatre's 'China Children's Theatre' was inscribed by Soong Ching Ling. Over the years numerous colorful and brilliant children's theater art were presented for millions of viewers. On the fourth floor of the theatre in 2005, a Holiday Classic Theater was created, interpreting classic story of all times on the theatrical stage with its relatively fixed performance time, mode and changes in a variety of styles. The establishment of the Holiday Classic Theater is not only a new exploration in the field of artistic creation, but also a whole new attempt in performing and business philosophy. The large and little theaters add radiance and beauty to each other each other and are bound to create a top art gallery for contemporary Chinese children's drama.

The Theatre will always follow the law of children's drama creation, making boutique, talents, brand and profit. 'Let every child in China enjoy children's drama' is the persistent pursuit of the China Naitional Theatre for Children.
