The Famed Red Snail Temple

2016-12-20

Hongluo Temple can be translated into Red Snail Temple, being one of the largest and most extensive Buddhist temples in northern Beijing and established in the Tang dynasty (618 A.D.- 907 A.D.). It is located at the foot of the Red Snail Mountain.

This temple houses four Buddhist halls, which stand on the north-south axis of it, including the Three Gate Hall (Mountain Gate), Devajara Hall (the Hall of Heavenly Kings), Mahavira Hall and Three Sages Hall.

One of the most prominent features of it is the 500-Arhat Statues, which are hidden in the pine forest inside Hongluo Temple, covering about 239,200 square yards. They are all life-sized statues. Surrounding a statue of the laughing Buddha, the 500 statues have been divided into 10 groups. The expressions on their faces vividly vary from one another.

The Red Snail Temple was built in the Tang dynasty and rebuilt many times later, notably in the Ming dynasty. Today it is open to the public.
