Decision fatigue is a very real thing. I know I’ve been at the point where the thought of making another decision is just tiring in itself. With the average adult making roughly 35,000 decisions every day (which way to open the door, which direction to walk toward, whether or not to stop and have a conversation with so-and-so), it makes sense to optimize how you decide and set your decisions up for success.
Below are three strategies to make smarter decisions no matter where you find yourself this holiday season:
Design your environment.
The key to making smarter decisions consistently is to avoid temptation all together. What this looks like in the real world is not shopping at the grocery store when you’re hungry, removing snacks from the kitchen counter so they’re less accessible, leaving your smartphone in another room when you go to sleep so you actually get some sleep and quit surfing. Set your decisions up for success by creating the right environment to make the right decisions.
Start with difficult first.
Before going to bed, decide what you’ll wear the next day so you’re not bogged down in the morning. Decide what you’ll eat for lunch and what priorities you’ll tackle first thing tomorrow. Start with those tasks immediately so you’re not wasting valuable brainpower in trying to decide where to begin.
Make it a process.
This was what Atul Gawande described in his book The Checklist Manifesto where he highlighted the fact that to err is human, which is why having a process for everything you do ensures consistency, limits bias and minimizes the potential for human error to occur.
