Located in No.220 Xiheyan in Xicheng District, neighbors to Tiananmen Square in the east, links with Liulichang Culture Street in the south, Zhengyici Theater is a ancient theater with history of more than 300 years old. It is the only wooden theatre that well-preserved in China. It is the milestone in the history of the development of the theater in China, praised by scholars as: "the living fossil of Chinese cultural history ", with a high visit and historical and cultural research value.
Famous Beijing Opera artists Cheng Changgeng, Tan Xinpei, Mei Lanfang and others had performances here. First built in 27th year of Emperor Kangxi period. The Temple Theater has witnessed the formation and development in the history of Beijing Opera. The performances are only on weekend.
Covering an area of 1000 square meters, it was all made of wood. Facing south, the stage keeps the original style which is opened in three directions. Opposite the stage is the bilevel watching pool holding about 200 opera fans watching operas and drinking teas. Zhengyici became a significant window for international friends to get more idea of China and Old Beijing life style.
