The Great Hall of the People is located on the western edge of Tian'anmen square, the south edge of West Changan Avenue. It is where the National People's Congress is held, where state leaders hold diplomatic meetings and the masses stage political activities.

Facing east, the hall covers an area of 150,000 square meters, 336 meters long from south to north, 206 meters wide from east to west with 46.5 meters high. The building area reaches to 171,800 square meters, even larger than the whole area of the Forbidden City.

The Great Hall of the People is the political hub of Beijing and home of the National People's Congress. Chairman Mao, Premier Zhou and Chairman Zhu De often held important meetings and received distinguished guests from all the world here. The hall is divided into three sections: the northern section is the State Banquet Hall that can accommodate 5,000 people, the central part is the ten thousand people auditorium, and the southern part is the administrative building of the Standing Committee of the People's Congress of China. The grand hall takes on a "山" shape. The magnificent and elegant architectures embodies the characteristics and style of our Chinese nation.
