Have you ever been counted that how many pagodas there are in Beijing ? It has been said that there are at least three or four hundred pagodas in Beijing.

According to ancient architecture specialists, ancient pagodas are varied in form and structure such as dense eaves style, pavilions style, anda style, vajra throne type, and so on; according to the building materials, there are brick, stone, clay, glass, copper, iron and wooden pagodas etc.

The well-known pagodas in Beijing are as follows:

1.Beihai White Pagoda in Yongan Temple: it was built in the Shunzhi Period of the Qing Dynasty, anda style, in 36 meters height.

2.Tianning Temple Pagoda: it was built in the Tianzuo Emperor of the Liao Dynasty with 57m high, being the highest pagoda in Beijing.

3.Yongan Wanshou Pagoda in Cishou Temple: built in the Wanli Period of the Ming Dynasty, it was commonly known as Balizhuang Pagoda or Linglong Pagoda.

4.Randengfo Sheli Pagoda in Tongzhou District: it was built in the North Zhou Dynasty, and the original structure had been destroyed within the reign of the Emperor Kangxi during an earth quake. After that, the Emperor Kangxi had reconstructed the temple. It is a representative building of Tongzhou Grand Canal that functioned as a lighthouse.

5.Glazed Pagoda in Zhaomiao Temple at Fragrant Hill: it was built for greeting Panchen Lama in the Emperor Qianlong Qing Dynasty, being the representative building of Jingyi Garden.

6.Haotian Pagoda in Liangxiang: with 40 meters high, it was built in the Liao Dynasty, being the highest attic-styled pagoda in Beijing.

7.Pagoda of Monk Wansong in Xisi Zhuanta Hutong: it was built in the Emperor Qianlong of the Qing Dynasty that contained the pagoda built in the Yuan Dynasty. Monk Wansong was the master of Yelv Chucai, one of the national buddhists in the early of Yuan Dynasty.

8.Vajrasana Pagoda in Biyun Temple: it was built in the Qing Dynasty, and used as the site for kept the coffin for Sun Yat-sen in the period of the Republic of China. There are more than ten vajrasana pagodas in China.

9.White Pagoda in Dajue Temple: the build time is unknown.

10. Luo Benzhen Pagoda in Baiyun Temple: it was at latest built in the Emperor Yongzheng of the Qing Dynasty. It was the rare Taoist pagoda of Beijing.
