As an imperial garden, there are varieties of plants planted in the Summer Palace. Sweet-Scented Osmanthus is one of the plants that have a long history in the garden.

The first Sweet-Scented Osmanthus tree was planted in the Qing dynasty moved from one prince's mansion. In 1928, there are 120 pots Sweet-Scented Osmanthus trees and 110 pots little Sweet-Scented Osmanthus trees on the plants list of the summer palace which account for more than half of all the potted flowers.

After 1949, there are 72 pots of the Sweet-Scented Osmanthus were planted at Yanghuayuan Garden, most of them are in good condition. The ages of these trees are over 100 years.

The workers of the Summer Palace have been exploring how to take good care of Sweet-Scented Osmanthus and they succeed on artificial florescence management in 1958 and clipped the shape of the flowers in 1971. Now, it has become a tradition that tourists come to the Summer Palace to appreciate Sweet-Scented Osmanthus in autumn.
