The venue ‘This place is not particularly amazing (or even that clean), but living and working in Sanlitun means that you in habit a bubble away from all regular Beijing life, with little opportunity to actually have normal jiachangcai [homestyle cooking]. Xiu Jiang Yuan is a little Chinese hole-in-the-wall on the same street at Middle 8th restaurant. It might seem surprising, but in the midst of all the amazing restaurants in Sanlitun, what we lack is decent jiachangcai.

Favourite dishes ‘What I crave most are the dry-fried potatoes (干锅土豆片) and the sautéed cauliflower with ginger (清炒西兰花).’
