Zhengyang Gate was formerly named Lizheng Gate, which is also popular known as Qianmen in Beijing. It was one of the nine city gates in the old city of Beijing.
It was an intact defending architecture system in ancient time and composed of three parts that were the city gate tower, the watchtower and the inner city. However, Zhengyang Gate has under many damages and repairs during the past half-century, only the city gate tower and the watchtower are well preserved at present, and these two buildings were once the symbol of the old Beijing city.
The tower in front of the Zhengyang Gate is the Arrow Tower. Originally, the gate and the tower were connected by two walls on both sides which looked like a jar shape, so it was also called Jar City. Actually the Arrow Tower served as the first block in defending the city during the war time. In the tower, there is Beijing Folk Exhibition Hall. Arrow Tower has been known as a symbol of old Beijing. Opened to the public in 1990, the four layers are all exhibition halls, with a total area of 1,200 square meters. The gate was opened in 1991, which showed the local conditions and customs of Beijing through the exhibitions “History of Beijing” in the first layer.
