Away from the noisy streets, surrounded with tall ancient cypress trees, Beijing Ancient Architecture Museum is situated in Beijing Xiannong Altar, which is the first theme museum of China gathering, researching and exhibiting China ancient architecture related artifacts, arts and their development history. Opened to the public on September 25 in 1991, it is a historic site under the protection of Beijing Municipality. It is devoted to the preservation, study and presentation of Chinese ancient architectural history, culture, technology, and art.
The magnificent and antique layout of the architecture makes it a solemn site for visitors. The exhibitions are mainly displayed in Taisui Palace, Prayer Hall, and Side Halls. The two major exhibitions in this museum are Demonstration of Chinese Ancient Architecture, and History and Culture of Temple of Agriculture. It exhibits a great many pictures, photos, material objects and elaborate models to introduce Chinese ancient architecture development history from the preliminary status of hutch and mud house to the high rising circumvallation in the Ming and Qing Dynasties and the palace building in neat formation.
Exhibits are divided into two parts: ancient architectures and the development of ancient Chinese architecture. The first part consists of the ancient architecture of Xiannongtan. The building, also named Mountains and Rivers Shrine, was the place for the Ming and Qing emperors to offer sacrifices to deities such as Xiannong, Taisui, and the Gods of mountains and rivers.
