Located inside Anding Gate, the Temple of Confucius in Beijing is the place where people paid homage to Confucius during the Yuan Dynasty, Ming Dynasty and Qing Dynasty. Temple of Confucius was initially built in 1302 and renovated twice during the Ming and Qing dynasties. It is the second largest temple constructed for Confucius, second to the Temple of Confucius in Qufu, Shandong Province.
The temple is divided into four sections: Xianshi Gate, Dacheng Gate, Dacheng Hall and Chongshengci. Right outside Xianshi Gate, two tablets can be seen on either side of the gate, inscriptions in six languages, Manchu, Chinese, Mongolian, Todo, Uyghur, and Tibetan are reminders to visitors, no matter how powerful they are, to dismount, indicating the sovereign and the central government’s respect towards teachers and education. There are three rows of houses and courtyards. On the central axes, there are Xian Shi Gate, Da Cheng Gate, Da Cheng Hall, and Chong Sheng Memorial Temple.
Temple of Confucius has various wonderful collections, and is famous for its stone carvings, such as Jinshi Tablets, Qian Long stone drums, Shisanjing carvings and other stone tablets built during the Ming and Qing Dynasty. Temple of Confucius is an ideal place for visitors to learn Chinese traditional Confucian culture and philosophy of Confucius
