The Muslim restaurant Hong Bin Lou (鸿宾楼) was established in Tianjin city in 1853. In 1955, because its long-standing reputation in quality, China's Premier Zhou Enlai invited the restaurant to set its first branch in the capital of China. From then on, its unique cuisine style has been famous in Beijing and strongly praised by gastronomes and Muslim people as "The First Name of Beijing's Muslim Restaurant".
The three-story restaurant has received many prominent guests and famous celebrities at home and abroad, including Chinese leaders Liu Shaoqi, Zhou Enlai and Zhu De; as well as Former Prime Minister Edward Heath of the UK, Former Iranian President Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Former Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohammed. Hong Bin Lou has also contributed much to cater the Muslim athletes in 11th Asian Games in Beijing 1990 and delegates from Islamic states attending United Nations 4th World Conference on Women, Beijing 1995.
Either in state banquet or at common supper, Braised Ox Tail in Brown Sauce is the most wanted dish at Hong Bin Lou Restaurant. Few Muslim restaurants will match the quality that Hong Bin Lou does the ox tail dish. A legend goes that when Qing's Qianlong Emperor (1711 – 1799) was traveling to southern China and he stayed at Jinan in Shandong Province, he saw a butcher, who was very strong physically with healthy skin tone. He asked him how did he to build up such a strong body. "No, my family is quite poor. Everyday after I killed an ox, the best quality meat I will sell out, the worse parts are for my family members and the ox tail for me." Emperor Qianlong ordered the royal chefs to make ox tail dishes. A few days later, his health had greatly improved and his memory grew stronger too.
