The Ancient Cliff House-A Mysterious and Enchanting Place

The Ancient Cliff House-A Mysterious and Enchanting Place

2016-08-15

The Ancient Cliff House is a riddle of eternal human vestiges. It is located in a secluded valley in the northwest mountain of Yanqing District. There are 117 caves in total, forming a cell-like spectacle on the cliff. It is known as the largest cave dwelling ruins that found in China by far.

There are stone stairs, stone ladders, and bridges connecting the rooms on different floors. The caves have different sizes and shapes. No matter what shape the cave may be, they all bear features of modern dwellings. On each side of the precipitous cliffs, adjacent stone houses, rectangular and square, large and small, were built. The houses vary in size, from over 20 square meters to 3-4 square meters. Some are interlinked perpendicularly, while some are interconnected horizontally. While inside the caves, there are many simple living facilities as the stone kang (stone bed), stone pillow, stone window, alcove, air hole and equipment for collecting rainwater in the living room; flue and the top of a kitchen range in the kitchen room and stone table in the storehouse.

The Ancient Cliff House is really a mysterious and enchanting place for visitors. However, the questions of who built the cave; when did they build it; why and how they built it, remain unanswered by historians and archeologists. It is still a riddle under investigation and we hope they will brush aside this mysterious veil in the near future.
