With a head team of domestic and international designers, Shanghai-based Spin has been in the porcelain business since 2002. Pieces are made and fired in China’s ceramic capital, Jingdezhen.

There’s a huge selection of ceramic art on offer, all of it handmade, singular and delightful. From the lumpy pots collectively known as the Seven Fortunes to the carved Japanese saké bottles and super-square jewellery boxes, the more you look, the more you have to smile.

Prices start from around 60-70RMB for cups and go upwards to 1,000RMB and beyond for sets and larger, decorative pieces. Even Temple Restaurant Beijing has a few vases from here. Relatively reasonably priced (a saké bottles cost RMB 70), they make great gifts for those more interested in the new China than the old.

Last autumn, the Spin crew opened their first New York City store to much applause, but take advantage of its home-grown roots. In Lido, you can still cop these gorgeous pieces of tableware for a third of the price abroad.
