Royal Danish Ballet: NAPOLI

2016-04-22

Royal Danish Ballet: NAPOLI will be held at NCPA-Opera House,Beijing from Jun.16 to Jun.17, 2016.

Three-act ballet Napoli premiered at the Royal Danish Theatre in 1842. It is not only one of August Bournonville’s signature masterpieces, but also a shining example of Danish interpretation of Romanticism. In Napoli we meet Teresina and Gennaro, a young couple that must suffer greatly before they can finally be united. Their boundless love and Christian faith lead them to defeat the powers of darkness and enjoy happiness. Choreographically, Bournonville sought inspiration from domestic as well as foreign styles of dance, juxtaposing classical dance in e.g. the pas de six with the tarantula, an Italian folk dance. Ever since its premiere, Napoli has remained one of Denmark’s favourite ballets and one of Royal Danish Ballet’s most influential repertoires. In 2014, Sorella Englund and Nikolaj Hübbe made an adaptation of August Bournonville’s choreography for Royal Danish Ballet.

THE ROYAL DANISH BALLET

Originates from 1748, the Royal Danish Ballet is the world’s third oldest ballet company. In 1771, the company established the Royal Danish Ballet School which is among the three oldest ballet schools in the world together with the Paris Opera Ballet School and the Vaganova Academy of Russian Ballet. Since 1830, August Bournonville has become the calling card of the Royal Danish Ballet. He staged nearly 50 ballets and numerous divertissements. Thus, the Royal Danish Ballet possesses a greater number of ballets from the Romantic period than any other ballet company in the world. Among these are La Sylphide (1836), Napoli (1842), A Folk Tale (1854) and etc. During the 20th century, it evolved into a modern company performing the work of Danish choreographers like Harald Lander (Etudes, 1948) and other international choreographers. After the Paris Opera Ballet, the Royal Danish Ballet has the largest number of Balanchine ballets in its repertoire in Europe.
