Beijing Film Festival Finds New Film Projects

2016-04-21

"Perfect Stranger" received the most nods as investors and producers of the film industry began seeking potential projects available for incubation at the 6th Beijing International Film Festival.

On Tuesday, the Project Pitches Road Show section of the festival was held in Beijing. The section has always been one of the key parts that receive much attention in film market. Outstanding film projects selected will be fully linked with elements of the film industry chain to incubate excellent film works with market potential.

In recent years, the completion rate of the film market has increased continuously, and attracted more attention within the industry. This year's final jury is made up of producer Chen Zhixi, director Teng Huatao, and Zhao Xiaowen, president of the Shengtang Times Culture Media Group.

The three jurors systematically reviewed the ten projects, and offered precious suggestions from different aspects including project characteristics, selling points, technology, and budget. A few projects with dark horse potential were recognized by the three jurors.

The ten shortlisted projects have their own characteristics, which are innovative and surprising works. The ten projects are "California Sunshine," "Perfect Stranger," "Dunhuang: The Legend of the Silk Road," "The Last Match To Lose," "Demons," "Six-Week Summer," "Flowers," "These Foolish Things," "Deadline," and "Grandpa's Counterattack."

Before the official road show, initiators of the ten projects received a two-day professional training session arranged by the organizing committee. They introduced their projects in an order decided by a drawing lot on the day of the show. Each representative of the initiators had 15 minutes to present their projects. After the presentation, three jurors raised questions and made comments. They analyzed the concept and hot film types such as soft science fiction, fan film, and sports film, and offered constructive suggestions. They all hoped excellent award-winning projects would be completed within the year.

After fierce competition, the final results were announced. "Perfect Stranger" seized four awards, while "Demons" won three awards; the two turned out to be the biggest winners of the Project Pitches section.

Huang Pei, deputy director of the Organizing Committee Office of the Beijing International Film Festival, noted that over the past years, the Project Pitches section had fostered multiple fine film works, including "My Beloved Bodyguard," "Mountain Cry," "The Seventy-Seven Days," and "Till the End of World."

The first session of Project Pitches was held in 2012, when they received roughly 50 projects. The projects that applied for registration soared to 674 this year, after three months' project collection, preliminary assessment, and review, 10 projects went into the final road show round.

At the event, in addition to the roadshow of ten projects for Project Pitches, project representatives of the previous event including Xin Chengjiang (director and scriptwriter of "The Gate"), Larry Yang (director of "Mountain Cry"), and Liu Hui (director of "Chasing Love Adventure") were present to support the shortlisted projects and share their experience. About 300 professionals and investors took part in the event.
