Dongjiaominxiang was built in the end of the 13th Century, the period during which Marco Polo visited the middle kingdom. At that time, foodstuffs from regions south of the Yangtze River were unloaded here, thus it was named Jiangmi Alley. Located in Dongcheng District, stretching 3 kilometers from Tiananmen Square East Road to Chongwenmennei Street, Dongjiaominxiang is the longest Hutong in Beijing.

Serving as a legation quarter during ancient times, Dongjiaominxiang is an European-style block that integrates embassies, churches, banks, offices, clubs in one. The existing main buildings are French Embassy, the Austro-Hungarian Embassy, Embassy of Belgium, Japanese Legation, Japanese Embassy, Italian Embassy, British Embassy, Specie Bank Citibank, Banque de I'IndoChine, International Club and French Barracks, etc, which are all preserved in the style of eclecticism of the 20th century.
