Tanzhe Temple, first established in Jin Dynasty, so in Beijing there is a common saying that "First there was the Tanzhe Temple, then came Beijing". The temple is built on a hillside and consists of various pavilions, prayer halls, courtyards and a group of pagodas dating from the Yuan, Ming and Qing dynasties.
When in the flowering phase, there are many purple magnolia, yellow magnolia and Trees for luck in the temple. Two purple Yulan Magnolia, planted during the Qing Dynasty, are considered treasures of Yulan Magnolia and are named “Erqiao Yulan Magnolia”. The “Erqiao” were two beauties during the Three Kingdoms. The two 400-year-old purple Yulan Magnolia are very fragrant and their blossoms are all purple. Located east of Piluge, these two also imply “the purple air comes from the east”, that is to say, good fortunes come from the east. Therefore, the two are also regarded as holy trees of luck and prosperity.
