Beijing Bird Watching Day Tour

2016-03-08

Wild Duck Lake is the biggest wetland in north China, Beijing's only national level wetland. It is comprised of lakes, ponds, swamps and grassland which cover a vast 1.5 million square meters. The good environment makes it a nice choice for many migratory birds. It is recorded that more than 264 kinds of wild bird species come to the wetland as stopping place during their migration. This makes the lake an ideal site for birding.

After the bird watching in Wild Duck Lake, then visit the Wild Duck Lake Wetland Museum. The museum contains a great number of sample birds and animals which once lived in this area.

Then head back to Shahe Reservoir in Changping District. Shahe Reservoir or Shahe River is a big lake with the 21 kilometers long, 100 meters wide which passes through Changping District.

Due to the improvement of the environment along the river, some migratory birds coming to the north from the South China stop here in spring, or to the south from the north, hence a nice place for bird watching.

The dam on the river is an ideal place for you to start your exploration either for birding or sightseeing. There is also a big island in the reservoir, linked to the bank by a simple bridge. The island is nicknamed Bird Island by the bird-lovers because it is home to many unnamed birds. On the Shahe Reservoir, if you are lucky enough, you will see wild ducks, swans, egrets, pheasants and much more.
