Exhibition | Sébastien Courty "Unknown Empire"

2016-03-31

Sébastien Courty was born and raised in Limoges, central France. At five years old his uncle taught him to combine his vivid imagination with whatever he could find. By seventeen, he moved to Paris to attend the École National Supérieure des Beaux-Arts where he found his artistic freedom. From 2011 he shifted into fashion and textile but brought his first love along for the journey-painting. This would lead him to renowned fashion institutes in New York and Paris; and later on to his solo exhibitions - White Print and Non-Washable.

Textile allows him to work on a surface like a canvas but for great practical use of the work - so rather than just hang it up on a wall, he wants to see his creations in as many forms textile allows itself to be transformed into. Courty believes it is currently important for an artist to be able to propose their work on different surfaces and for different aesthetics.

At his Non-Washable show in New York, Courty painted on three-dimension surfaces and screen-printed on silk organza and other luxurious fabrics. The result was an artistic mirage, layers of images that blend together leaving one intrigued by the depth of the work's character and the artist's research.

For the third solo exhibition he brings a deeper understanding of art and textile to his "UNKNOWN EMPIRE" show at Beijing Aotu Studio from April 2nd to 29th, 2016. Courty has a unique ability to translate the ideas of ancient civilizations in addition to images of current living into ambidextrous fabric. Depending on the mood, the fabric can embellish a wall or can complete a space.

"I wish you could find an absolute feeling of faith and devotion", he says. “See the reflection of nature in wrinkled silk. Feel the trace of time in rusted, burnt surfaces that resembles nothing you've seen before.”
