Shichahai and Houhai Hutongs

2015-11-03

Shichahai is comprised of three areas, Qianhai, Houhai and Xihai. Most of the famous sites are centered in the Qianhai and Houhai areas. Shichahai is the only sightseeing place where you will find natural scenery, historical culture, urban culture and traditional folk customs mingled together. It also has one of the few parks in Beijing without an enclosing wall. Many historical relics remain well preserved in the Shichahai area, including magnificent royal mansions-where princes of the Ming (1368 - 1644) and Qing (1644 - 1911) dynasties once lived, quaint houses for common folk, and tranquil temples. All these reflect the beauty, vitality and charm of Beijing. Many distinctive hutongs and the former residences of celebrities are well preserved in this area. The fashionable bars in the area are the best choices for relaxation and entertainment. There is no doubt that Shichahai is an ideal place to discover both the ancient and modern charms of Beijing.

Walk east along the street to Lotus Market, recognized by a big archway with the name “Hehua Shichang” on it, the Chinese equivalent of Lotus Market. Go inside and you can stroll along the west bank of Qianhai Lake, where you will find a variety of bars extending to the northern side of Qianhai. At the northern end of Qianhai, you will find Yinding Bridge which connects the Qianhai and Houhai areas. Many hutongs converge at the western end of Yinding Bridge. These include, Dajinsi and Xiaojinsi Hutongs which are examples of well-preserved hutongs reflecting the local life-style of the past 200 years. During your tour you can also see the typical Beijing courtyards and the many stores which have been remodeled to catch your eye. Turn left on to Dajinsi Hutong. Stroll along it until you reach Nanguanfang Hutong, and then head west along the hutong to Qianhai West Street.

How to get there: Tourists can take bus 60, 13, 118, 701, 42, or 823, or subway line 6 to the north gate of Beihai Park.
