1. Badaling Great WallTo date, this 3,741-meter section of the Badaling Great Wall has been open to tourists, comprising of 21 city units and enemy units. Badaling Great Wall was built along the ridges of mountains, looking precipitous from the external wall but gently sloped from the internal wall. It is a year-round travel destination. Mr. Zhao Puchu, a famous poet, calligrapher and president of the Chinese Buddhists Association, unveiled the miraculous scene of Badaling Great Wall in all seasons: “We are impressed with the spectacular scenes of Great Wall, as beautiful as pictures. The centuries-old Great Wall has always been so charming in all ages. It is best loved in spring days of blossoming flowers, summer days of green trees, autumn days of sea of red leaves, and winter days of white snows. Looking into the distance, the Great Wall gives expression of infinite passions of old and new.”

2. Mutianyu Great WallThe Mutianyu Great Wall (慕田峪长城) is one section of the Great Wall in Beijing. Located in Huairou County, about 85 km away from Beijing downtown, the section enjoys a long history and is a good choice for those who want to see a restored section of the Great Wall, which is more fun and less crowed than the Badaling Great Wall, and not as far as Simatai or Jinshanling.

3. Simatai Great WallSomewhat tamed after a series of deaths led to the closing of its most dangerous stretch, Simatai (司马台) nevertheless remains one of the best options for those who want more of a challenge from the Great Wall. The most harrowing portion, steep and not restored, is on the east (right) side of the Miyun Reservoir.

4. Jinshanling Great WallLocated in Hebei Province, the Jinshanling Great Wall (金山岭长城) is the least visited and least spoiled of the Great Wall sections listed in this section. It is 10 km east of Gubeikou, through which Qing royalty passed on the way to their summer retreat at Chengde. This section is in good condition, as it was after 1570 rebuilt by the outstanding general, Qijiguang. Bricks are smaller, reflecting advances in wall-building technique. The section features unusual circular towers and elaborate defensive walls leading up to the towers.

5. Juyongguan Great WallThe Juyongguan Great Wall (居庸关长城) is the section of Great Wall before you get to the madness of the Badaling Great Wall, about 60 km away from downtown Beijing. It is the relatively peaceful stretch of the Wall and the most conveniently accessed section of the Wall. Climbing the steep section to the left offers marvelous views of Badaling, snaking up the mountains to the north, and south toward Beijing.

6. Gubeikou Great WallLocated along the Yanshan Mountain range in the northeast of Miyun County, between Shanhaiguan Pass and Juyongguan Pass about 100 km away from Beijing, south of the hill country of Panlong Montain and Wohu Mountain, the Gubeikou Great Wall occupies a strategically important location which is difficult to access.

7. Huanghuacheng Great WallThe Huanghuacheng Great Wall is located in Jiuduhe Town, Huairou District, about 65 km away from downtown Beijing. This section at 10,800 meters long is a resort with mountains, lakes and the ancient wall. Going to Huanghuacheng Great Wall, you have four things to do at least: first, you should take photos; second, go to visit the chestnut garden under the wall; third, climb up the steepest section; forth, look at Yaoziyu Castle.

8. Jiankou Great WallThis section is for serious hikers only. It Starts at Xinzhaizi Village where the road dead-ends into a parking lot, following the trail up to the Wall. Turn left once you reach the wall, and prepare yourself for an intense 5-hour hike. The tallest watchtower in the distance is Jiankou, and just before you reach it, there is a turnoff point that is marked by a flat, paved section of the Great Wall that leads you back down to the road.
