1 Peking University
When it was established in 1898, the school was known as the Imperial University of Peking (京师大学堂). It was established to replace Taixue or Guozijian, or Imperial Academy, as part of the Hundred Days’ Reform. Peking University is the first university in the modern history of China. The Peking University’s campus site is near the Summer Palace and the Old Summer Palace; the area is traditionally where many of Beijing’s most renowned gardens and palaces were built.
2 Tsinghua University
Tsinghua University is located on the former site of the Qing Dynasty royal gardens and retains Chinese-style landscaping as well as traditional buildings, but many of its buildings are also in the Western-style, reflecting the American influence in its history. Along with its rival and neighbor the Peking University, it is known throughout China and the wider world for having one of the most beautiful campuses. Tsinghua University’s campus was named one of the most beautiful college campuses in the world by a panel of architects and campus designers in Forbes in 2010; it was the only university in Asia on the list.
3 Renmin University
Renmin University of China also known as People’s University of China, is a major research university situated in the Haidian District of Beijing. The university was founded by the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China in 1937. RUC has leveraged its close relationship with the communist party ever since to become renowned within China for social sciences and social policy, with its Chongyang Institute for Financial Studies listed in official media as one of China’s top ten most influential think tanks. Many graduates of RUC have risen high within the communist party, and the university is home to many outstanding scholars in law, economics, and journalism.
4 Beijing Foreign Studies University
Beijing Foreign Studies University (BFSU) is a university located in Beijing, China. It is China’s foremost foreign language teaching university according to recent collegiate rankings. The university’s campus occupies 304,553 square meters, with a student dormitory area of 40,000 m² and a library of 9,997 m², and is divided in two by Beijing’s Third Ring Road. Other facilities on campus include an audiovisual center, a gymnasium, dining halls, and tennis courts.

The university has been selected as one of 38 national key universities to directly receive funding from Project 211 and Project 985, aspiring to build itself into a worldwide known leading university.
