Zhengyangmen means "Facing the Sun Gate" and was the most compelling of the nine gates of the inner city wall that separated Beijing's imperial quarters in the Forbidden City from the "Chinese City", where, during the Qing Dynasty, the Chinese residents lived.

This tower and Arrow Tower (Jian Lou) are collectively known as "Qianmen". They are famous ancient city gates that used to be a part of Beijing's city wall. Zhengyangmen and Arrow Tower are located just south of Tiananmen Square in Beijing, China.

The arrow tower has 4 floors. There are 94 watch windows on the three sides of east, south and west, which are used for shooting arrows. The arrow tower became a tourist attraction after 1915. In 1976, earthquake happened in Tangshan and arrow building was destroyed. Beijing cultural relic department in charge repaired comprehensively. 1990, it was formally opened to tourist.
