The Ancient Bell Museum is located in Dazhong (Big Bell) Temple in Haidian District. The temple was built in 1733 during the Ming Dynasty, for the emperors to pray for rain during periods of drought. In the temple there is a giant Buddhist bell, 5.6 m in height and 46.6 tons in weight. It is one of the largest bells in the world. Therefore, locals call it Dazhong Temple.
The museum collects 400 cultural relics, including 6 state-level pieces. The functions of the museum include collecting, protecting, exhibiting and researching ancient bells, and spreading bell culture. It houses more than a hundred ancient bells of different shapes and sizes, also several thousand research documents about bells. Many tourists are attracted to this beautiful temple’s environment by its unique exhibitions and interesting activities.
