The renowned band Trio Globo will pay its first visit to China from Sept. 29 to Oct. 13. Trio Globo consists of three master musicians, Glen Velez, the percussionist, Howard Levy, the pianist and harmonica player, and Eugene Friesen, the cellist. Trio Globo has won the Grammy Award 10 times. They combine Jazz with world music, creating their original music in the field of modern Jazz.
Glen Velez, the father of the modern drum has won the Grammy Award 4 times. He, a Mexican Texan is one of the legends in the field of percussion. Velez plays single hand frame drum whose origin dates back to ancient Mesopotamia culture. In addition to performing, he studies the rich history behind the instruments, and the usages of many ritual instruments. In his adolescence, he spent most of his time listening to be-pop Jazz, tried to play various percussion instruments, and put them into his Jazz performance. In 1967, his interest was diverted from Jazz percussion to Classical percussion, and he entered the Manhattan School of Music and studied percussion under the guidance of Fred Hinger. In the 1980s, Velez developed a passion for frame drum playing. Devoted to the field of percussion, he gradually formed his love for single hand frame drum. In 1983, he met Paul Winter and became a member of Paul Winter’s Team. He released his first album Handance recorded together with drummer Layne Redmond in 1984.
Howard Levy is recognized as the most excellent ten-hole harmonica player in the world. He is a milestone in the development of ten-hole harmonica. In the 1970s, he systematized the bending technique of ten-hole harmonica, and utilized the creative playing techniques making ten-hole harmonica a chromatic scale instrument. In 2007, he launched his DVD album, Out of Box in which he merely used a C harmonica to play 12 songs in different styles with 12 different music modes.
Eugene Friesen, the famous cellist, pianist, composer and conductor has won the Grammy Award 4 times. He is a music professor of the Boston Berkelee College of Music. After graduating from the Music College of Yale University, he became a core member of Paul Winter’s team in 1978 and then joined Ttrio Globo. His 4 albums, Spanish Angel, Silver Solstice, Crestone, Miho: Journey to the Mountain recorded with Paul Winter and several other musicians separately won the Grammy Award in 1994, 2006, 2007 and 2011.
The programs will be played in this concert include Lumbriga, Stephanie’s Dance, Ghost in My Heart, Frame Drum Solo, In the Village, Cello Solo, Harmonica Solo, Tuppim and Maracaibo.
