Wangfujing Church, Dongtang (the East Cathedral) or St Joseph's Church, was established in the twelfth year during the reign of Emperor Shunzhi in the Qing Dynasty (the year 1655). It is the second Catholic church built after Nantang (the South Cathedral) established in the late Ming Dynasty which is now located north ofQianmenWest Street. Chinese Patriotic Catholic Association was founded in August, 1957. Religious activities was restarted at the church in 1978.
