Xuanwumen Church, also called Nantang (the South Cathedral), is a catholic church with a long history. In 1605, the thirty-third year during the reign of Emperor Wanli in the Ming Dynasty, Priest Matteo Ricci built the first small-scale church there and the German Jesuits Priest Johann Adam built the first cathedral in Beijing in 1650. The South Cathedral combines a Baroque architectural style and China’s architecture elements. The western side of the cathedral is residence of the priest, the observatory, the library and the instrument pavilion. The cross with a height of four meters stand on the top of the church and many emperors in the Qing Dynasty inscribed for the church.
