Hidden away on a small side street you could almost miss this small place, but Bungalow bar was indeed impressive.
Though set in a modest tiny store front and filled with kitsch that seems to abound in these types of watering holes, Bungalow doesn’t waste your time and energy with those unsavory versions of Tiki drinks you could possibly find in a small Southeast Asian beach town. Instead, you’ll find traditionally crafted tipples straight through the recipe books of Don the Beachfront Comber or Broker Vics.

Starting around 45 kuai per cocktail this place is actually hard to beat. I tried the particular Jet Pilot (RMB 58), and it was everything that it ought to be. Filled with crushed ice submerged in a long list objects and topped with those delicious Luxardo Cherries, it was the perfect mix of sweet, sour, and bitter inspired from a 1958 recipe from the Luau in Florida.
Other Tiki drinks on the menu include the Zombie Punch (RMB 80), Mai Tai (RMB 45), and Leilani’s Volcano (RMB 45), just to name a few.
Although Phil, the owner, is often busy behind the bar if you get a chance ask for some recommendations on or off the menu. Not only is Phil’s knowledge of cocktails extensive but so to is his knowledge of the history behind them all which is often half the fun.
