A Nine Dragon Wall is a screen wall with reliefs of nine different Chinese dragons. The dragon is the symbol of power, but is also symbolic of luck, prayers for rain, a god to control floods, and in some cases, is symbolic of longevity. Nine Dragon Walls are typically found in imperial Chinese palaces and gardens. Below are the three famous Nine Dragon Walls in China.

Nine Dragon Wall in the Forbidden City

The Nine Dragon Wall is a relatively recent addition to the Forbidden City. This huge glazed screen wall was constructed in 1772 during the reign of Emperor Qianlong in the Qing Dynasty. It was built to provide privacy by blocking the view through the Huang Ji Men (Gate of Imperial Supremacy) into Ning Shou Gong (Palace of Peace and Longevity). The screen is 29 meters long and 3.5 meters high. Nine dragons, each playing with a pearl, are carved in a very lifelike manner. A golden dragon is in the center and eight dragons in blue, white, purple, and yellow are placed on one side of the screen. The center dragon was the symbol of the emperor.
