The Legend of the Condor Heroes (《神雕侠侣》) is among the most beloved wuxia novels, and a favorite for film and TV adaptations. The new TV adaptation of the book has become a laughingstock online, with the female protagonist Xiaolongnü (小龙女), particularly targeted for ridicule. A reserved, cold, indifferent, yet elegant character, she is portrayed quite out-of-character by actress Michelle Chen, as cute, comical, and immature. Her hairstyle has given birth to a new meme on the Chinese internet: the “imitate aunt competition”.
