The large, illuminated Stella and Boddingtons signs outside Come Beer Bar suggest an establishment that takes its beer drinking seriously. But the sign for the bar itself suggests otherwise. Perched above the door, the bold black lettering of ‘Come Beer Bar’ is embellished with some kind of stylistic white liquid dripping off it. Puerile thoughts cloud our mind.
Maybe it’s supposed to be the foam of a frothy lager spilling over the edge of a vessel or maybe it was a last-minute decision by some uninspired graphic designers. A flamboyant neon glow spills out from Come onto the street. This bar is giving out all sorts of strange signals. We’re enticed in for a drink.

The twin fridges at Come are well stocked and the beers varied. We pop a Cherry Kriek (RMB 20), before things get a little messy with a Sticky Toffee Ale (RMB 20), and then we just have a Vedett (RMB 25). There’s no microbrewery here but they didn’t become popular in Beijing until 2012 and we very much get the sense that Come is trapped somewhere in the late 80s
